The body of a huge whale has been found on the north coast of Cornwall. The Cornwall Wildlife Trust Marine Strandings Network believes it to be a fin whale, which had first been reported floating close to the shore off Pendeen.

The whale was originally spotted by Jean Lawman, a keen naturalist who regularly watches out for marine wildlife. Jean saw it about three kilometres offshore through her telescope and realised that it was too big to be any other species. Fin whales are often seen at this time of year, but sadly this one appeared to be dead, so it was reported to the Marine Strandings Network Hotline. Unfortunately, the whale did not beach and continued to float on the tides.

Five days after the first sighting, the Marine Strandings Network's Hotline was alerted again to the whale after it had been seen near Porthtowan. Remarkably, it had floated 37 kilometres east/north east along the coast from its first position. On this occasion, as the tide receded, the animal came to rest in a small cove where it was examined and recorded by Gary Hawkins, one of the Network's team members.

Gary explains "It's hard to describe just how massive this whale was. Even looking down on it from the cliff top above it looked huge, it was the length of an HGV lorry! I measured it at nearly 17 metres and the length of one of its flippers alone was 2.5 metres. But then, it is the second largest animal on earth!"

Although the whale was breaking up, Gary was able to take samples from it for the Institute of Zoology in London, which authorises the Strandings Network to collect samples on their behalf so that more can be learnt about these amazing animals. As Gary observed, "It was amazing to attend this animal in death, but can you imagine a mammal this size swimming in our waters? It's very humbling."

A fin whale is stranded on the North coast of Cornwall, photo by Gary HawkinsThe cause of the whale's death was not obvious from examining her, but fin whales are known to be the species most affected by ship strike. Although the fin whale is one of the fastest whales in the sea, and can travel at speeds of up to 40 km an hour, it can still be caught unawares when sleeping or resting on the surface and few whales survive a collision with a ship.

Fin whales can grow up to around 25 metres long, with the average at around 20 metres, and a female whale can weigh up to 120,000 kg. Remarkably, they can live for up to 90 years. Although they are inaudible to the human ear, the whales' low frequency calls can be heard by other whales some 850 kilometres away.

Since the 1990s they have been seen during most winters off the coast of Cornwall. Their vertical blows are easily visible from some two miles away without binoculars, and they may stay close to the surface for about a minute and a half minutes each time they surfaceThey then dive to depths of up to 250 meters, although they are also known to enter shallow water, and each dive can last between 10 and 15 minutes. They have a varied diet of fish and squid, but may also eat krill and copepods. With their huge mouths, which make up about 25% of their body length, they can take in up to 70 cubic meters of water in one gulp.

Fin whales numbers are probably rising steadily since the cessation of commercial whaling, which vastly reduced their numbers. However, Japan and Iceland have now resumed hunting these whales and their intention is to increase takes in the near future, despite the fin whale being considered an endangered species. In the summer of 2009 for example, 125 fin whales were caught by Icelandic fishermen.

The public are urged to report any dead marine creatures to the Cornwall Wildlife Trust Marine Strandings Network on 0845 201 2626. However, the Network strongly advises not touch any stranded animals as they may pose a health risk.

My name is Nick Watson and I am the team leader of a charity event that is taking place in August 2010 in aid of Diabetes UK. We are a team of cyclists attempting to cycle from John O Groats to Lands End and are aiming to into Lands End on the evening of 12th August 2010. We are looking for a place to camp and your camp site looks just the place.

First and foremost, please allow me to give you a little information about the event. My wife, Michelle lost her sister, Kirsty, to D.K.A ( a diabetes related illness) last summer and therefore we are trying to raise as much money for the charity as possible in order to fund more research into the disease. Kirsty was 17 years of age when she lost her life. The cycle will be approximately 1000 miles taking in the lochs, Ben Nevis, the Lake district among other amazing places. We require pitches for no more than 8 small tents and parking for three vehicles. If you could accommodate us, it would be fantastic.

What can we do for you? We will be wearing t-shirts which will bear the logos of any sponsor along the way (if you can supply an electronic copy of your logo). We also have a web link on which we can advertise any one who sponsors us along the way. We intend to get the local press involved, releasing press releases to the newspapers which will include the name and location of our stop overs and will inevitably provide you with a good source of advertisement. This is obviously with your permission. We do not expect anything for free but fully appreciate every little help that we can get in order to support our ride.

Rare dolphin sparks great interest

A white-beaked dolphin was found stranded on a beach in St Mawes on Saturday 16th January. The 2.4 metre long dolphin was initially reported to the Cornwall Wildlife Trust Marine Strandings Network as a porpoise. However, when Jan Loveridge, the Network's Co-ordinator, received photos of the animal she discovered it was a dolphin that is very rarely seen in Cornwall.

Dawn Andrews, a member of the public who reported the rare dolphin to the Network’s Hotline, says "Although it is sad to see a dead dolphin, it did give our children an opportunity to examine this beautiful creature close up. They were fascinated by the blow hole and its small, blunt teeth, and particularly by the smoothness of its skin." Twelve year old Josh Croft was another youngster who witnessed the stranded dolphin and was able to take some excellent photos, which he has given to the Marine Strandings Network for their archives.

"This is one of only nine stranded, white-beaked dolphins ever reported in Cornwall" says Jan Loveridge, "We're very pleased that so many people in St Mawes took the trouble to report it to us and it was great that the children took such an interest. There's nothing quite the same as seeing a dolphin close-up, although if a dead marine animal is found, it is advisable not to touch it as it could be carrying diseases that humans can catch.” The hope is that, although witnessing such a scene can be distressing, may also inspire the public’s interest to help conserve marine wildlife

Golowan Festival & Mazey Day 27th June

The Golowan Festival - named for Gol Jowan in the Cornish language meaning "Feast of John" - is a recent revival of an ancient festival celebrated in years gone by to mark the arrival of Midsummer. Originally revived as a project amongst some local schools, helping to bring their heritage to the children of today, this has now become a ten-day celebration of music and the performing arts with venues all over Penzance during the second half of June.

The Festival runs for approximately ten days in late June, with details being available in the Events Diary. The culmination of the Festival is over three days of the weekend around St John's Eve. Summer Fire on the Friday of that weekend is a spectacular fireworks display as a finale to some light-hearted events around the Jubilee Pool on the Promenade.

Mazey Day on the Saturday of that weekend sees the town centre transformed with banners and leafy decorations, the streets closed and street markets, processions and a Serpent Dance featuring walking displays made by the children of many of the local schools in, and around, Penzance. Quay Day on the Sunday is a celebration of the harbour and Penzance's maritime history with visiting boats welcomed and decorated to add to the festive atmosphere, many stalls and street performers around the harbour, and a fair with traditional rides and entertainment.
